Is there any better other way to spend your 20th birthday then on a Greece island?? I didn't think so! Even before we arrived in Cyprus we were planning to go somewhere for Kelly's 20th birthday and Crete was just the place! The flight was short and cheap (thanks to RyanAir) and who else could say that they spent their 20th birthday on the island of Crete? The airport in both Pafos, where we flew out of in Cyprus, and in Chania were sooo small! we arrived at Pafos airport 2 hours before hand because we're used to that in America, but were actually too early and had to wait to start the check in process. Also the Chania airport was even smaller then Pafos and the security there was very minium. Luckly there was a bus to take us from the airport to the town which was nice to save some extra money and then from the bus station only had to walk a few blocks to get to our hostel. After we checked into our room we shopped around a little bit and got some groceries and headed back to take a little nap because we were all so exhausted from traveling all morning. That night we walked around the old harbor to find a restaurant to eat at and we went to one that served traditional Greek foods. Kelly and Hogan both got the slouvaki and I got a chicken pasta and which was all delicious! And after that they gave us some free greek cake and raki. Raki is a very high proof of alcohol that the greeks drink and our waiter said that its supposed to help with the digestion of food. Lets just say that one shot of that was more then enough!
Our second day in Chania, we slept in till about 10:30 (which was wonderful if I do say so myself) and then walked around the old town of Chania and and through all the little allyways and around the old habor and the new harbor. It was a nice day to be tourists and take pictures. Unfortunately all the shops were closed on Sunday which was a bummer because we passed by so many. Later that night we got dinner at a little place called Tamam which is a little bit off the old harbor and then went to some of the bars to celebrate Kelly's birthday.
On Monday, Kelly's actual birthday we got up early and then went to the shops we wanted to go into the day before but were closed and then we went and got a FISH PEDICURE! You know, where you sick your feet in a tank of fish from Thailand and they eat the dead skin off of you! Oh my lord! Was that a cool experience! I've always wanted to try that and I'm so happy I did! Kelly and Hogan were screaming like little girls the whole time! I didn't think it was that ticklish but it felt like little vibrations on your feet. And boy were they soft afterwards! We only paid 10 Euros for a 15 min trial and the lady working gave us an extra 5 min free too which was super nice of her! Then we walked down to the beach which was probabaly a good 20 min walk. And the beach wasn't that big. Most of the waters edge is very rocky and not good for swimming. The water was little too cold to go swimming but we put our feet in and found some cute sea glass. It was a big bummer to see that the beach was a little polluted with garbage though which broke my heart a little bit. Aside from that, the water was still extremely blue and we took some really cute pictures with the Greek flag I brought with! Later that night we took the bus to this restaurant called Koukouvaya which is on the top of a hill that over looked the whole city and it was SO breathtaking and not the mention that the food was to DIE FOR! We also their famous chocolate cake that had fudge and ice cream! mmhmm! So delicious!
The next time I go to Crete I'm going to have to go in the summer time because a lot of their attractions were closed for the winter but it was such an amazing experience and I'm so happy we went! Until next time Crete!
PS. Chania is pronounced without the C so like Hania :)
OH! and Crete has HUGE mountains too! And there was TONS of snow on them also! We had no idea Crete had that large of mountains! If you look closely, you can see them in some of the pictures, they almost blend in with the sky.
