Carnival: Two week long celebration before the start of lent. In Cyprus the Carnival starts later then some of the other countries because the Greek Orthodox easter is later then the Catholic easter is. It mostly takes place in Limassol where there are parades and giant street parties and everyone dresses up in masks and halloween costumes. My friends and I stayed in Limassol for the last weekend of Carnival. Friday and Saturday there wasn't that much going on, we dressed up and went to the old city where there was a strip of bars and cafes. A lot of the locals were dressed up too but on Sunday is when the big parade was. The parade started at 1 and ended around 6 and was about 3 miles long! My roommate's family (who lives in Cyprus) told her that there was 20 thousand people who participated in the parade itself! And the parade isn't like a normal American parade, they don't through candy, they have whistles, horns, handmade confeftti, and silly string and just make really loud noises and through confetti and silly string EVERYWHERE and on EVERYONE. The ground turned into a carpet of confetti. The best way to describe it is Halloween on steroids.
