To get to the Northern side of Cyprus, you have to cross the green line. First you have to let the UN scan your passport and then the Turkish side stamps this piece of paper because their not allowed to stamp your passport because no other country in the world recognizes it as a state, its actually a psudo-state because its an illegal state and if they stamp your passport, I might not be allowed back into the United States because it would be an illegel entry of a country. So after your in the North side theres alot of touristy shops but after a few blocks you start seeing abandoned buildings more and more and is a result from the war of 74' where Turkey invaded.
To get to Kyrenia, you have to take like a 30 min bus ride to get to the coast. And trying to find the bus station in the North side was so hard to find! We were going back and forth like six times! And a lot of people that we were asking if this was it didn't speak english and everything was in Turkish. Finally one guy told us were it was at and said which bus it was and it didn't take long after that to show up. However, by the time it got there, half of our group didn't want to go anymore, which was better in the long run because this bus only fit around 12 people and was so sketchy! But the ride there was BEAUTIFUL! We went through the mountains and it was just an amazing experience. Once we got to Kyrenia, there was a harbor and we got there just in time for the sunset behind the mountains and we spent so much taking pictures and then there was also a castle (that I cant remember the name of) and we walked around it. Once it started to get darker after the sunset we got food and everyone there is just so nice. And there are a lot of stray dogs and cats around and our waiter told us that the government doesnt support keeping the strays healthy and vaccinated so the locals take them in to get their shots and then tag their ear so everyone knows they've had their shots and then re-release them. Also the restaurants give them the leftover food at the end of the day! Hearing that made my heart melt! I was feeling so bad for them, but their very healthy and well fed!
